Weight logging is an important tool to help monitor your guinea pig’s health. As we already had a proper scale, it became our Sunday ritual to weight our cavies and log the results in a spreadsheet. We’ve noted some interesting results, and caught several health problems before they became symptomatic by observing a weight loss.

What is the difference between a Rescue and a Shelter?
By CavySpirit

A shelter is usually an organization associated with the city or county. They may receive monies from the local government or may be supported by contributions, or a combination. Most shelters are not "no-kill" facilities, that is they put down animals for a variety of reasons, overcrowding at the shelter, health problems, etc. Most shelters are 501(c)3 non-profit organizations, meaning any donations are tax-deductible. (Extensive list of all shelters.)

A rescue is usually one person or family operating a rescue out of their home. Very few have separate facilities. Some work with foster homes to spread the animal care to more people. Some have no animals and work purely with foster homes, although that model is found more typically with the larger animals. Some have a few volunteers. Many are funded predominantly by that one person or family and a few contributions. Most are not 501(c)3 non-profits and tend not to get as many donations and therefore need them even more! A rescue usually never comes close to breaking even and always needs contributions of time, supplies, bedding, food, hay, and money.

PetCo had suddenly realized that PetsMart’s sales skyrocketed when it began engaging in Social Cause Marketing by ‘partnering’ with animal rescues. The increased foot traffic to the store on adoption days is in itself enough to give a sizeable boost to PetsMart’s sales. And although PetCo had allowed “adoption days”
From inside:

"The participation of rescues in the Social Cause Marketing programs of PetCo and PetSmart results in nothing less than weakening of the cause of animal welfare. Pragmatically speaking, you cannot make progress by contributing to the problem you are trying to solve. No matter how hard you try, you will never put out the fire if you are throwing more matches in."read more
for years and also given many grants to animal rescues, its programs had nowhere near the sophistication of PetsMart’s “charities.” In an effort to catch up, PetCo partnered with PetFinder, a national adoption database, and last year released a statement that PetCo would encourage the public to “think adoption first” when seeking a pet. PetFinder in return promoted PetCo’s new slogan to rescuers, encouraging them to participate in PetCo’s “adoption days.”
