We were looking for advantage as well and couldnt find anything. The vet has it but said we need a perscription and without finding the bug they wouldnt give a perscription. We got 2 stores around here best one is a 35min drive. The fortifier farm place didnt have anything for lice or mites just insects.
I found this on the guinea lynx site.
NOTES ON TOPICAL PARASITE TREATMENTS AND USING A KITTEN-SAFE PYRETHRIN SHAMPOO
Frequently recommended for treatment of lice is a kitten-safe pyrethrin shampoo.
With any pyrethrin shampoo, follow directions enclosed and insure the animal is dry before returning it to its living quarters.
Vicki at JPGPR makes these observations and offers further advise concerning choosing a suitable shampoo for lice treatment:
- "I recommend using a pet flea and tick shampoo with an active ingredient called pyrethrins - at a strength of about .05%. Usually there is also an ingredient called piperonyl butoxide. Find a shampoo labeled as safe for cats and kittens. Don't get anything that claims to be extra strong or quick acting. Give your cavy a bath, being very careful not to get soap in his eyes or nose. Putting a little sterile eye lubricant in his eyes first will help repel any soap that gets too close, or have an eyedropper handy in case you need to flush soap from his eyes. Use a soapy finger to carefully shampoo the ears and the face. Follow directions for amount of time to leave lather on (usually 3 - 5 minutes) then rinse well, being especially careful not to get water in his eyes, nose or mouth. Towel dry and blow try on low - or let dry naturally in his towel covered cage (to prevent drafts). Repeat treatment 2 more times with a week between treatments. Each time you bathe the cavy you must also wash the cage and accessories well with flea & tick shampoo. This procedure usually solves the problem, though a 4th bath can be given if necessary. Lice are a common cavy problem. Cavies get lice from other infested cavies. Cavy lice do not infest humans or other animals, but can be transferred to other cavies by "hitching a ride".
The Zodiac I got contains .05% Pyrethrins .
