Re: Would like to Adopt n Central, FL
Be careful about getting guinea pigs from craigslist as it is sometimes breeders that are "adopting" out their stock. So you are just continuing the cycle if you take ones from breeders. Please go to the shelters and rescues as they are always full.
Shelters first, rescues second

Re: Would like to Adopt n Central, FL
I posted a link for the Petfinder Orlando area before all the Craigslist ones. My zip is 32708. There are a million in Orlando but they will all give you Orlando results I think there are only 3 available in Orlando right now.

Henle15: Why you say shelters first??? I thought craigslist first, so they do not end up being snake food or worst.

Re: Would like to Adopt n Central, FL
I think it is fairly easy to figure out whether someone is proposely & indiscriminately breeding & avoid those types if that is what you wish to do (that is entirely a personal call). But there a lots of good people that are trying to find proper homes for their pets on these community classified sites. I tend to support helping a fellow animal lover first over any other options because often these people are dealing with time sensitive situations where they are in desparate need of finding a home for their pets. Too often they have already waited too long & they only have days before they would have to drop off at a shelter or local pet store that receives surrendered pets. Often their only recourse is to utilize a sevice such as craigslist because running an add in the newspaper is extremely expensive. Just use common sense when talking to people on these sites found online because the scammers do run rampant there.... but you are indeed saving a life because I know for a fact that there are people on the CL for my area that are collecting small animals as feeders. I met several when I first tried to use the site to find homes for an oops litter that I took in & hand raised after the Mother rat died shortly after delivery (severe URI). For the record if you have not seen my intro, I take in surrendered pet rats. I will never attempt to rehome a pet on that list again but I do continue to look for surrenders there so long as I have room to take them in & they are in good health. There are plenty of oops litters out there because of people buying already pregnant piggies or getting a pair & finding out they got a boy & girl instead of getting a same sex pair... & then you find yourself with a bunch of oopsies & no way to financially support the negligence of a shop that does not properly separate the boys from girls.
I also greatly support shelters because the rate at which unwanted pets are being put down goes up & up. But you have to be very careful about shelters because often these types of pets (small mammals) are subjected to unhealthy not so well ventilated conditions & they are so susceptible to airborne illness... so investigate your shelters before you go in & see all the "help me faces" because at that point it is really hard to remain practical.
Private rescues are a really great choice because most often these people are the last chance stopping grounds of a family pet before it is placed in a shelter where it may be PTS. They are also not funded & do this deed out of the goodness of their hearts & out of their not so deep pockets.
Good luck with your search.... I know I am racking up a lot of hours of effort & investigation with my search for a companion piggy in South Florida.

Re: Would like to Adopt n Central, FL
This is a pair posted in CL
**2 GUINEA PIGS: MOMMY (1 YR) & DAUGHTER (8 MOS) & CAGE & SUPPLIES*
Reply to: comm-736577462@craigslist.org

Mommy (Magic) just turned 1 year old on June 22nd, and her daughter (Lucy) will be one on October 26th. Magic the Mommy is black and white, and soft and adorable. Lucy her daughter is brown and white with the same soft hair. They are sweet, and must stay together. We just don't play with them as much as they need. Magic and Lucy will come with their large cage, toys, bowls, food, Aspen Pine shavings, Timothy Hay, vitamen drops, & water bottle. Perfect good mannered little pets for you to love! Small rehoming fee for Magic & Lucy (they are NOT snake food!), and I am only asking $70.00 for their cage and ALL of their supplies. Thank you.

Re: Would like to Adopt n Central, FL
The reason I say Shelters first is because thousands of guinea pigs are euthanized at shelters daily. Also most of the staff at a shelter has no idea how to properly care for a guinea pig. That means those animals are in need more than ones that are in homes already. Small animals are the first to be euthanized if room is needed for dogs or cats.
Craigslist in my opinion should be a last resort to find an animal because like I said before, most are animals that are being bred and you are just helping the cycle by taking them from them.
Like the one you just posted, it sounds like a breeder ad and they are asking way too much for everything for an "adoption" fee.
I agree that the shelter you take the piggies from should be clean but the earlier you get them out of the shelters then the less of a chance they will be sick. People that are legit and really have the animals best interest in mind will not post an ad on a free site like craigslist where people are alwas looking for free or cheap food. If a person does not screen you when you inquire about an animal, they area breeding them and trying to just get rid of them.
I can just about imagine about the pet rats because there are some sick people that inhabit craigslist and they have no regard for living creatures. Also if you are adopting an animal from craigslist why would you pay a fee, where is that money going? At a shelter or rescue at least it is used to continue rescuing animals and not making more babies or making somebody rich.
I think AIA has great points and knows what he/she is talking about. You have to ask questions and you will know if that person is breeding them or acutally trying to find them a home for the right reason.
Also have to add that getting an animal from a rescue is your best bet if you want a friendly, HEALTHY pet because good rescues will not adopt out a sick animal and they know more than the general person about what type of animals they rescue...hence the reason they rescue that type of animal!

Re: Would like to Adopt n Central, FL
I know this is REALLY off topic but... Henle15, I noticed that the pig in your avatar has a line down its face. One side dark, one side light. My pig has the exact thing! One half of her is her dark brown side and the other is her light brown side. Almost the same tints of brown too.
You can see it on my avatar. The brown pig in the middle. I have better pics of it though. I thought it was strange at first. But every pig is different!
