| Rescue Status & Surrender Policies |
While rescue organizations vary greatly on size, ownership, policies and
practices, two key factors are consistent with rescues around the world:
#1) Limited resources (time, money and capacity), and
#2) They do not put down animals.
Most rescues are a run by one person or a small group of people. Because
rescuing is a personal drain on resources and energy, most rescues run a course of
time -- anywhere from 6 months to 6 years. A fully active rescue for longer than
10 years is the exception, not the rule. However, even if a rescue
closes its doors to surrenders and ultimately stops doing adoptions, a veteran
rescuer can be an excellent source of knowledge, leads, connections, support,
guidance and coaching.
To that end, not all rescues listed here are actively taking in surrenders or
doing adoptions. Please confirm the status of the rescue before trying to adopt
or surrender your animals. Contrary to some belief, it is not the 'job' of the rescuer to take in your animal(s). It is your privilege to find a rescue willing take, house, care for and try to rehome your animal(s) on your behalf and at their personal expense.
IT IS ASSUMED and you should know, that
ANY rescue ONLY accepts animals into their rescue IF
THEY HAVE ROOM. This is the key distinction between a rescue and a
shelter. So, even if a rescue states they are active and accepting animals,
that is by no means a guarantee that they CAN accept your animals into their
rescue. Also, just because a rescue indicates that they accept surrenders, does not necessarily mean that they accept private surrenders. Rescues that have been around for a long time might only accept shelter animals in need because they are generally overwhelmed with private surrenders from being well-known and established. Look at the surrender status in the rescue details. And regardless of information posted here or anywhere, you need to check with the rescue before assuming you've found a 'home' for your guinea pigs!
