Default Finding a TRUSTED rescue?

After the holidays, we will be adopting a second cavy to keep Chutt Chutt company! I finally talked hubby into it! YAY!

But, he said we should get a gift certificate from Petsmart for a pet store cavy. I went by tonight (most reluctantly) but there was a tiny baby there (4 weeks old MAYBE) who had a horrible itching problem. She had bitten and scratched herself bloody in several places and it broke my heart to see it. I mentioned it to several people, but no one seemed to care or DO anything. It was all I could do to NOT wish a case of head lice to each and every one of them.

I decided then and there. If I am going to find a friend for Chutt, I need to be talking to rescues. People who understand piggies and their unique personalities. Chutt is pretty dominant and to find her a friend that will most likely get along, I can't just go to the guinea pig mill and plunk down cash for just some pig.

Okay. I'm sold. I can sell it to hubby, too. But now the next issue. How do I find a piggy loving person who pays close attention to the orphans in their care? Who knows their medical issues and personalities well enough to help us find a lifelong pal for Chutt?

How do I go about finding the right rescue??

Help?

I am in Nashville, TN. But more than that, are there criteria for finding one for future readers who might not live here?

If they are listed on this site, they are reputable. Teresa the administrator asks for several references so the "bad" rescues can be sorted out. Also most rescues listed on Petfinder are also ok.

If you live in Nashville I highly recommend Knoxville Guinea Pig Rescue. I have adopted five pigs from her and everytime it has been a wonderful experience and the pigs were very healthy and well cared for. Another rescue that is within driving distance and also a wonderful rescue is North Georgia Guinea Pig rescue. Either one of those rescues would love for you to fill out a application and help you find a pig that is perfect for your family.

Thank you for considering to adopt and not purchasing a pig. Together we all can make a difference . . .one pig at a time.

Hi There, I have a male guinea pig and I would like to get him a companion. He is approximately 8 months old. Can you help me find a rescue near me??? I live in Rhode Island. I purchased my guinea pig from PetSmart BEFORE I knew that you could adopt a guinea pig.

Thanks for your help..
Lisa
