Re: Small white bugs on Shadow
Foggy, I think you are way over reacting. If Ziggy found a way to cure his pig, then it's good, and a responsible guinea pig owner will make sure that it is safe, and that is what he did. Also, he doesn't have to follow the advice from the forum.

Re: Small white bugs on Shadow
Summer, somtimes the information that's out there is not correct. Sometimes, what you do now may not have an immediate result, but an accumulated effect.
A responsible guinea pig owner may want to do what's safe, but have the wrong information.
No one ever has to follow the advice given on the forum.

Re: Small white bugs on Shadow
Summer - I posted on the site for advice. I took the first advice "take her to the vet" but did not get results.
Foggy I appriciate your concern. I did phone around and looked around for both products mentioned but could not find them. A month has almost passed since I first posted and felt an alternative was in order.
I did wash her quickly I didnt let the shampoo sit on her for 5min like whats recommended. I just lathered and rinsed with a small amount. Luckly they were gone and shes fine.
We got to cuddle with her the other night for the first time in weeks she just flopped over on the blanket and slept. She must of misssed us so much but with bugs on her I didnt want her on the blanket or couch.

Just like you mentioned above and I will quote the excerpt "Cavy lice do not infest humans or other animals, but can be transferred to other cavies by "hitching a ride"."
I do not mean to sound rude when I say this, but, if it can only be transferred guinea pig to guinea pig why did you not bring her out for floor time or lap time? She must have been lonely for weeks. I know you still cared for her "through the cage" but you still could have brought her out. Unless you nurtured your piggie a different way not mentioned, I don't know.

Re: Small white bugs on Shadow
I don't know where you got that page. Looks like an old link.
But here Guinea Lynx :: Parasites
Beware of flea and tick powders and shampoos -- many contain pesticides that are dangerous for cavies.
You need to get ivermec or Advantage or Revolution. You can order any of them online. Advantage is OTC as is ivermectin.

You can also order Revolution from petshed.com without a prescription and they will ship it to Canada.

Re: Small white bugs on Shadow
I checked with Lynx from Guinea Lynx. She said that page you refered to, ziggypiggy, is an old one (check the date on the bottom) from an older site and was made before the newer and more appropriate information was discovered. Lynx is working on having it taken off the net, since it contains erroneous information.
Check the new and correct link that sus gave in her post.

The vets I phoned said you needed a perscription for Advantage and Ivermectin because they wouldnt give it out without giving you proper dosage.
I dont need anything now the bugs are gone.
Im going to do some research on the active ingrediant in the shampoo and see why it is safe for a kitten and not a guinea pig. Is there skin that much different? Nervous system that different? I dont understand a 3lb kitten can handel it and a 3lb guinea pig cant.

I forgot to mention that it was not determined what the infestation was. I would have to presume that it was fur mites because whatever they were they were not bothering her to make her scratch or bite.
