Small white bugs on Shadow

Hi everyone

I was pettin Shadow tonight and I thought I saw somethin movin on her. I looked up close on her black fur I could see white bugs..

What are they?

How can I get rid of them?


I handle the pigs quite offen and have never seen them before. Nor has she been scratching or biting herself.

Sounds like lice Guinea Lynx :: Lice But you may want to ask a vet.

Topical ivermectin or Advantage eradicates most parasites.

Hay bugs? What would those be?

Usually pigs get mice or lice from contact with pig who has them.

Theres only her and Ziggy and Ziggy is clean for now anyway. Thats why im wondering where they can come from.

Guinea Pigs need fresh hay to eat every day, not only does it help keep their teeth short it is also an essential part of their diet. They also LOVE to hide in hay and have it as their bedding. However this does have its consequences as often in hay are tiny bugs that soon move in to your Guinea Pigs fur. My Guinea Pigs have some tiny bugs in their fur which are proving really hard to get rid of. If I clean out their cage and just put hay in their racks they lay around sulking and after a while I find they have knocked the racks down and are laying on an island of hay.

That sounds awful. I wonder how Shadow caught them? You should take them both to the vet. If Ziggy doesn't have them now, might catch them from Shadow.

Weird. In all the years I've bought ton after ton of hay, I've never had little bugs in the hay. Dead grasshoppers, but no live bugs.

Ive never seen bugs before either in the hay. The person could be wrong who wrote that. I was just searching around the web last night looking for answers and came across that.

You should refer to Guinea Lynx :: A Medical and Care Guide for Your Guinea Pig for care or medical questions instead. That website doesn't sound right. Baby shampoo won't eradicate parasites either.

You should get ivermectin or Advantage and treat all your pigs.

I just talked to the vet he said he has to look at her. I asked about advantage he said that wouldnt treat lice if thats what it is.

Anyway hes either comin over here sometime in the next day or 2 or shes goin in saturday for an appointment. So we will find out what it is.

In the mean time I decided to bath her cause im grossed out and before doing so I checked her allover her again and now i cant find any. So i gave her a bath anyway.


So now i have another question. What about dust mites? I could only see them on her black fur. They were on the top not by her skin. Shes not itching or biting yet.

Could it have been a fluke that a few dust mites got on her and i happened to see them ?
