I went to the pet store today. Looking for some piggy pressies.... and I was shocked and appalled at what I saw. Two male Guinea pigs, at least 1 1/2 to 2 years old, maybe older, in plastic tubs with CEDAR bedding! And upon further inspection, they had nasty nails that were curved around their feet and splitting. I felt sooo sorry for these pigs. I almost brought them home but was afraid that they may be ill and get my Whiskey sick. It was so sad, I felt like yelling at the lady and telling her that she should know better! It just broke my heart!
This is a tiny one man operation pet store. I think the lady is the owner and corporate office! When I asked her about their age she said she couldn't be sure as they were just dropped off not long ago. I'm seriously thinking of giving her an informative call! But would she listen?
Probably not. If it's a one man operation, she's probably just needing to unload them ASAP and doesn't know better or care much. But if you're nice, there's no telling. Maybe one will wheek his way into her heart...
Well, I called her today, and in a nice way told her that the cedar was bad for them, I said I wasn't sure if she knew or not ... and she got huffy, saying "After 22 years, I know, but we were out of pine at the time and they will be fine". I wished I had the nerve to tell her that I SAW pine in her store when I was there AND that I know she tells customers that cedar is fine for them! What else can I do?
Well you can take it up to the officials of the store. I saw something similar to this at a pet store. The insides were horrible and i saw 2 guinea pigs I wanted. so the guy goes to pick him up and grabs the guinea pig by the hump on top of their neck!!!it started squealing and he just held it there and the second time i saw him do this i told him thats not how your supposed to hold them and he just said oh well and put the guinea pig back down in the cage it was horrible they were squealing so loud and their living conditions were so sad!
To help end the abuse of animals in petstores please report all incidents of neglect or abuse to the authorities and do not buy anything, animals or supplies, from stores that sell animals.
What a discrase people are doing today with these piggies, it should end Cedar is a avoid to all Gunieas I would write her a letter about what is happening or if you want to tell her upfront?
