Default New Favorite Food!

I used to think that Guinea Pigs liked all foods pretty much the same, and that it wouldn't matter too much which food I bought them. (I'm not talking about fresh greens, I mean like the food you buy at a pet store.) Then earlier today I went to Petco to get more bedding and hay, and saw that the Kaytee Fiesta food was on sale, so I got it. I forgot that I had more of the other kind I had in all the excitment of cleaning their cage. So I filled their bowl with the new food, and they went crazy! They just started to devour the food dish, and it's not like they were hungry, since their bowl was full before the cage cleaning, and they already had their greens for the day.

What GP food do your piggies like the best?

BTW, in case you don't know what food I'm talking about it, here it is on Petco.com: Linkie

I bought that for my piggies and they loved it too. But after a month of buying $15 for that little food when its not your money your mom tend to pull the plug on that. Now I pay $5 for more food. I buy Kattee Supreeme Fortified Daily Blend. And my piggies still eat it. And just because their hungry, not because it tastes soo good.

Oh dear. I hate to tell you guys, but Kaytee is total crap. It's probably one of the worse foods you can feed your pigs. Especially the Fiesta. Do you see all those nuts, colored bits, seeds, etc? Those are all bad for your pig. Too much fat, sugar, artificial colors, and the seeds can lodge in their mouths or throats, causing abrasions and even abscesses, not to mention choking. The Kaytee Supreme doesn't have all that stuff, but it has ethoxyquin, a preservative known to cause cancer in rats.

You want a plain pellet. No fancy stuff. Of course your pigs like it, because it's like eating candy. The best foods are found at Oxbow Pet Products | Welcome or Kleenmama's Hayloft :: Home . Oxbow can be found at many pet supply stores or veterinarian offices, or online. If you can't get one of these excellent pellets, at least do your research and learn to read labels.

Ditto foggy. Neither of those Kaytee pellets are any good. You should be feeding a high quality plain pellet - no seeds or nuts. You're feeding the equivalent of junk food.

Petco pretty much sells crap feed.

I don't buy the fiesta but I get the regular pellets nothing in them from Kaytee, but I did see it was alfalfa based. I am switching!

Where could I get this Oxboow food other than ordering it? Ichecked online at Petco.com, but they didn't have it. I like going to Petco since there is one so close, but I do have other pet stores around to go to.

As I mentioned before, you can get it at some veterinarians, or at some pet supply stores. These are the stores that don't sell pets (thank goodness) but only pet food and supplies. They are quite trendy around here, for people who want to buy the more nutritious foods for their pets and not support the stores that sell pets.

I believe you can also contact Oxbow and ask where the closest place is.

Ok, thanks. I will try Concord Pets. They do not have pets, but only supplies. Thanks a lot, I'm glad that I made this pointless thread. I actually ended up learning something new that will make my piggies happier. :] TY
