Feeding Hay
Ok, I have two GP's. I know that they need an unlimited supply of hay, but I like them to have a neat and tidy cage not covered in hay and stuff, and I thought that if it's on the floor they could poop or pee on hay then eat it. And also, when I just plop a pile of hay on the floor of their cage, like half gets eaten and the other half gets thrown around. I know it's fun for them to have it on the floor to play with, but I have two, and other sweet things for them to play with, so I don't think that'll be an issue with finding another way to give it to them.
I noticed in pet stores they have the hay in a bowl, but it it like mega ground up. Should I do this for my piggies, or is this another pet store flaw in Guinea Pig care? Also, I have seen multiple hay feeders for mounting on the cage, so if anybody has one that they like a lot, please tell me about it.
TY guys

Re: Feeding Hay
They should have piles and piles of hay. Not small bowls of it.
You can use a hay rack or litterbox to contain it but they like to sleep and play in it like you said.

Yes--you have to think about what's best for the pet, not what you think is visually pleasing. Although I think seeing my pigs tunnel underneath the hay and then lie on it relaxing is a very pleasant sight!

Re: Feeding Hay
I want to mention that the quality of your hay has a lot to do with how messy it looks. Good hay gets eaten pretty darn fast. I give a big handful in the morning, and it's almost always gone by evening, when I give them another big handful. If your pig consistantly leaves a lot of hay uneaten, then perhaps you need to invest in a better quality of hay.

OK, thank you for the tip. I think that I'm going to get Oxbow food and hay starting when all this runs out.

Re: Feeding Hay
I'm looking into getting Oxbow but the price of shipping costs more than the product and my piggies eat up the hay I give them pretty fast so I really see ne point in changing now.

Re: Feeding Hay
If you buy in bulk, it comes to about $1 a pound. Cheaper than tiny bags of mediocre pet store hay and it ships right to your door.
