Re: Grow Timothy grass?
Hay is very hard to make. If it rains, th ehay is no good. It has to be cut at the right time. I know you may have a hope of growing hay, but I would just buy good quality hay from a horse farm, Oxbo, KM's Sweet Meadow, etc...
I would not give the cat grass to them. It is probably called cat grass for a reason, it is for cats. Just give regular grass from outside, but make sure it does not have chemicals on it.

Re: Grow Timothy grass?
Cat grass is just grass--it's fine to give your pigs. If you put the whole container in with the pigs, make sure they don't eat the seed/root part down at the bottom. Often it gets a bit "moldy". It would probably be better, if buying cat grass or wheat grass, to cut it and feed it that way.
Many people have grown their own grass in containers. You can grow just about any type of grass. Lawn grass, timothy, orchard grass, etc. Wheat grass is probably the easiest.

Re: Grow Timothy grass?
Update: I went to a farmer supply place last night and they have timothy grass seeds and said it is a cold season grass. I bought some and will plant it in the garden this weekend. So, as long as there is no snow cover, I should have fresh grass to cut for my three wheekers. A little warming up in the house and it should be ready to eat!
Actually, the guys at the farmer supply place said that timothy grass is a very common grass and that I probably already have it in the garden - as a weed!

Crab grass is a weed, and they can eat that... Right?

Re: Grow Timothy grass?
A weed is just a plant that someone thinks it undesirable. Grass growing in your vegetable garden is a weed. Most people think of dandelions as weeds, even though they are classified as herbs and can be eaten. Timothy is not weed to a timothy hay farmer.
Most the grass that grows in your yard is okay for guinea pigs to eat, if not all of it. Usually a pig will not eat something that is toxic (usually, but not always). If you try to feed them something from your yard and they won't touch it, then don't feed it.
