Bad news! URI
Linny crossed the Rainbow bridge, and Penny is on Baytril. They got URI. We are doing our best!
We are handfeeding her. I am going to double check the site for specifics. If you have any suggestions in treatment or things that I can do, please let me know!
I am worried for Chimicuino and Chibi. They look healthy, but you never know. I couldn't take them to check up too. My husband lost his job (lay off) and after the vet I am totally broke...grrr. I get my paycheck on friday, so I'll take them then. Unless I have to run. Then I'll figure something out. No of the vets in my area take payment plans. Of course they are expensive also.
The vet wanted me to give Penny NutriCal. I asked, but he said that is high in Calcium, so I said no. He also wanted to dewormed her, and give me dewormer medicine for the other two. I never read anything like that for GPs, so I said no. Should I get that? I only took what I knew she needed. Bottom line it was the AB. I hope I did not make a mistake there.
Penny weights 1.3 pounds. He put her an injection of Baitryl, and once a day baitryl orally (22.7 mg). I have her in a 2x2 C&C cage separated from the others while she gets better. Is that ok for now?
Please let me know any suggestions! I am heartbroken!

Re: Bad news! URI
Cielo, I'm so sorry about Linny. I don't have any medical advice, I just wanted to offer my condolences and let you know I'm sending some "get well soon" vibes Penny's way.

Re: Bad news! URI
No dewormer. No nutrical. Critical Care or pellet mash is better as a supplement for herbivores.
Do you have a probiotic? That's a good idea to have when you are giving an antibiotic.

Re: Bad news! URI
Im pretty sure this is what they mean by poop-soup. I got this from Guinea Lynx (http://www.guinealynx.info/handfeeding.html#preparation)
Probiotics
Your pet may have been prescribed antibiotics. All antibiotics affect the normal gut flora to a greater or lesser extent. Dangerous antibiotics like penicillin are deadly because affects the normal flora of the gut, causing a fatal and irreversible diarrhea. But even recommended antibiotics may affect the flora.
A half of a dropping from a healthy cavy dissolved in a small amount of water and added to the food is reportedly the best way to re-inoculate the good bacteria and boost appetite, especially if your cavy is on antibiotics. Other people feel the addition of a small amount of powder from an acidophilus gel tablet will help to restore gut flora. Yogurt has live acidophilus cultures but is not the best choice as it is a dairy product. Since cavies are herbivores, milk products are not recommended.
The probiotics would be given an hour or two after administering the antibiotic.
