Hey there, new here!
Hey there! My name is Candy and I live in NC. Last night I just adopted a 1 year old male from the rescue in Charlotte. He seems to be very tame and loveable. I do not know much about these little guys and look forward to seeking out all I can about them. His name is Benny and I think he is what they call a Dutch. He is gray in the front and rear, and white in the middle with a white stripe down his face. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. He seems to not mind us-being the kids ages 13yrs and 10yrs, my hubby, or myself. We also have 2 gerbels, 2 parakeets, one cockateil, and 2 poodles. I look forward to meeting more parents of these adorables creatures!

Re: Hey there, new here!
Hello! I've only had guinea pigs since October. One of the females I received was already pregnant! On December 27, she delivered 3 healthy babies. I was a nervous wreck, but now that the babies are here I'm pretty thrilled. I ordered two C&C cages for my herd, which will be arriving in two days. I've been looking online to order some pretty fleece fabric to line the cages, and then I remembered that my daughter had some old fleece blankets, so she donated those. When the babies are bigger I want to add a level to each cage. I really didn't know what I was getting into when I got my first guinea pig, Sally. I ended up getting Princess 3 days later because Sally was so mopey. They don't like being alone.
The gang has a vet appointment January 22 to get checked out and sexed. I am almost positive Princess is a female, but I keep them separated right now just in case. When I get the sexes sorted out, I want to put Sally and Princess back together with any girls, and boys together separately. From what I can tell, and I am no expert, Princess, Sally, and Buttons are girls; Bambi and Bunny are boys.
There's a lot of good information at Cavy Spirit, Guinea Pig Lynx, Peter Gurney, and Guinea Pig Cages.

Wow! It sounds like you have nice little family there. Glad the babies are all doing well. You will probably really enjoy the new cage too. I am thinking of making one myself for Benny. Thanks for the reply and good luck with the babies and the others.

Re: Hey there, new here!
We made the transition from small to C&C cage very gradually, first putting the small cage INTO the C&C cage. Chutts is very much a creature of habit and adjusts slowly to new things. She is so happy with her new, big surroundings! She loves to redecorate, moving things from here to there, coming out and checking the arrangement every so often. It's so funny to watch!

Re: Hey there, new here!
Congratulations on being a new mom!! Cavies are very addicting in my opinion! I adopted my two from the local shelter as well and they are/were wonderful! One of them passed away three days ago so I am on this site hoping to maybe find a rescue cavy for the lonley brother, Boo Good luck with Benny!

Re: Hey there, new here!
You need to get Benny a friend, and make them a great C&C cage!

Re: Hey there, new here!
I am going to make Benny a coroplast cage. My husband can get the coroplast at work. I need to go to Target tomorrow and look for the grids. I am not sure how Benny will get along with another piggy. I am not sure if he has ever been with another one. The rescue didn't tell me that info, but he did have scabs all over him when I got him so I am not sure if that is from others picking on him or what. They are all gone now though...

Re: Hey there, new here!
The scabs were most likely from mites. Did the rescue treat him for mites?

Re: Hey there, new here!
They did not tell me at the rescue if he was treated for them or not. Just that he was about a year old, and he was microchipped. How do they get mites?
