Hi from snowy Denver, CO
Greetings!
My name is Lori, aka mud... but I needed five letters, so I'm now muddy. I live in the metro Denver, CO area, where we're in the midst of our third snow storm in three weeks.
I am a SAHM to my soon to be 9 YO DD. We don't have a piggy yet, but want to get one this month. This is a planned thing for us... except the last time we were going to get a piggy, we ended up with a hamster who we loved into his old age... then another hamster came to us in need of a home. We still have one hamster, but are looking forward to sharing our love with a piggy.
This will be our first piggy, but it's something I've researched for a few years now; plus we've had friends who've had cavies. I have the cage and supplies, so we're just looking for a responsible breeder, or a piggy in need of a home.
Regards,
mud

Well, hello Mud! I went to Cherry Creek HS and hung out a LOT on Grant St. downtown where my boyfriend lived! I miss the snow something awful. After CO I moved to CA for 25 years and hated it. Then we went to OR and it was fantastic! Now I'm down south in TN, but it's just like CA with humidity.

Hi, if you haven't found a piggy yet, check out Craigslist. They had a posting Dec 31 from a rescue in Aurora, Cavy Care Inc. Tehy have 48 pigs available for adoption. I don't know how far that is from you, but I can tell you, I bought my first pigs before I knew about rescues and got my third from a shelter. He is the best pig ever. He came from an abusive situation and I think he is so happy to have a normal, happy home. I am rewarded by his sweetness every day. Happy hunting and good luck

Re: Hi from snowy Denver, CO
Well hi Lady C! I don't know how much you'd like the snow. Since 12/20, we've had about 48" of snow with more to come in a week. As you know, this is NOT normal Colorado weather. I'm a NY'er formerly and am used to the snow, but even this is doing me in. Even my daughter is sick of the snow.
I've been to OR and loved it as well. My ex wanted us to move there... it was very humid there. Haven't been to CA other than a quick drive thru and have never been to TN. Eventually I hope to say I've been to all 50 states.

Re: Hi from snowy Denver, CO
Thanks! I've been checking craigslist about every other day - that's how I got a cage. I didn't see a Cavy Care post, I'll have to check again... but I've been to their website and am aware of them. Unfortunately, they are pretty far from me, so getting a ride there is near impossible, especially with all the snow we've been getting. I've checked all the shelters, and a few other sites. I was considering posting on freecycle, but I figured if anyone needed a home, they'd post it. I'm very much into taking in a resue... that's how I've always gotten my furry or feathered - they needed a home. I've done cat rescue and fostering, bird rescue and fostering... have taken in hamsters needing homes... now my daughter wants a pet that's not nocturnal, and I think a piggy or two is perfect for us.

Oh, no I don't mean the HUMID, rainy side of OR! We were in the Cascade Mountains - the beautiful High Desert!
I remember in CO we almost always had a green Christmas and a white Easter! I remember that ice crystals form on top of the snow and make it glitter in the moonlight. And I remember it being light and a joy to shovel. I used to stare at it all night long from my bedroom window.

Re: Hi from snowy Denver, CO
Lady C., I've been to the region of OR you lived in and loved it too. I even have an old framed print from the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival hanging right by my computer. I went to the inn there on a legit blue moon in June in shorts and changed into sweats mighty fast. I loved the Columbia River region as well, and went hiking there. We spent a lot of time in Portland. Lincoln City was nice and beyond picturesque. Kalamath Falls was an experience I with to never repeat!
Back to the snow of CO... We get a blizzard every 3-6 years... 3 storms in 24 days is too much everyone to cope with. I have a huge mountain of snow in the parking lot of my apt. blocking my view. I should take a picture of it and use it as my avatar until I get my piggy.
This was the first white Christmas in the 11 years I've lived in CO and my daughter's first. Yes, you're soooooo right, we usually have a white Easter; and have even had snow on Memorial Day.
It is pretty to watch the snow, til it gets trampled on and dirty. I also love watching it snow.

Re: Hi from snowy Denver, CO
In 2003 in Oregon, we had snow flurries on June 6th and again on September 30. Mighty short "summer" that year! But at least the summers there are mild. Even 90 isn't bad because it's dry. Yeah, once the snow gets driven on for a while it's ugly. In OR they use this pretty red volcanic rock to sand the roads, so even the road snow is pink!

Re: Hi from snowy Denver, CO
Hello!
You will want to consider adopting a pair of guinea pigs--just one will be lonely, no matter how much attention you give it. They are very social and need companionship of their own kind.
You will also want to make sure your cage is large enough! Take a look at the cage size requirements on Cavy Cages . The site shows how to make your own really nice great cage.

Re: Hi from snowy Denver, CO
Thanks! I already have a large cage and ton of supplies that I've slowing been purchasing so we would be ready when we brought our new piggy, or piggies home. It is my intention to save up for a nicer and larger cage in the next few months... but I also don't plan on keeping the piggy in a cage all day as I have a large playpen with an open top that sits on the floor. I was hoping to adopt a pair... but I ended having my daughter come home with her birthday present a few weeks early - a black American piggy from Petsmart. Had I known, I probably would've taken his brother too... but they came home with the one boy. Meanwhile, my daughter was nagging me for a white female!
I think the kid now understands why I wanted to adopt from a rescue or shelter and had already done paperwork for the rescue group. Hopefully I will end up with another piggy (or two!) of my own to love.
The Petsmart piggy is not used to people one bit but he's slowing making progress and getting used to us. Unfortunately, an almost 9 year old does not understand the slow process or patience, but she's learning.
For right now his name is George and I made a song for him to the tune of George of the Jungle.
George, George, George of the Igloo,
Scared of me and you!
George is enjoying trying new veggies and eating his hay.
