Smile Can you help me find a pig?

Hi everyone! Can you please help me out? I use to breed guinea pigs when I was younger, now I have a son and every time we visit a pet store he loves looking and watching the guinea pigs. I was thinking about getting us one because I miss having them around and he seems to enjoy them so much. I have yet to find one in a pet store that I like. Most stores around here only have few to pick from and they all seem very timid.... I guess I was spoiled when I was younger because we raised them and they were always so tame. I would love to 'rescue' one. I'm looking at all the classifieds on here and falling in love with all of the cute piggies available, but they are all too far away! Do people ship them?? If so, how do they go about it? Is it safe? I'm located in Northern Missouri.

Another questions I have.....can you tame a guinea pig? Has anyone ever had any experience taming a timid guinea pig? Is this possible?

Thank you so much for your help!! Megan & Ayden

Alot of piggies are timid, especially babies. It takes time to tame them. Hold them often so they get to know you.

Shipping is hard for piggies. I think its too much stress.

It's best to adopt a pair. Try Guinea Lynx :: Rescue Organizations and Petfinder.com: Adopt a pet and help an animal shelter rescue a puppy or kitten.

I hope you aren't planning on breeding anymore.

Thank you for the helpful information.

I don't quite understand your comment sus4rabbitsnpigs. Is it for some reason meant to be hateful?? No I'm not planning on breeding them.

It was not meant to be hateful, I'm sure.

She helps alot of people understand more about guinea pigs. And because you didn't state that you weren't going to breed she was ensuring that your new pigs were going to be well taken care of. Which I'm sure they will be. Have fun finding the perfect pig for you and your son!

Have you checked the Classifieds here? There are lots of cute piggies there to adopt!

I suppose I have nothing to add to your questions, but compelled to put in my thoughts. It was not in a mean way. Simply this site is not for persons who breed guinea pigs. We are rescue/adoption oriented. Once you have had your gp for some time they will get to know you and not run so fast away from you. Constant love, caring and fresh veggies is what have made mine love me.
It is always best to have a pair so they have someone to be lazy with. Take your time and the right gp will come to you. I had to travel to a rescue to adopt mine and hope to go back to get some more at a later date. It is only a three hour drive one way. Good Luck

Oh yes, breeding is very bad. There is an over population of guinea pigs in shelters, and the more you breed then the more pigs die. Not to sound mean or anything, but rescuing is the best choice.

Megan, sus4rabbitsnpigs was not being hateful or mean to you. If you re-read her reply to your post you'll see that all she did was provide you with helpful links and state that hopefully you haven't any intentions on breeding anymore piggies. Please note that I am not attacking you nor am I trying to be mean to you. Neither am I taking sides because I don't know either one of you personally. I'm not sure if you have noticed this or not but this is a pro rescue / anti breeding forum. The people on this site care about piggies and their welfare very much and only want the best for them.
I realize that both you and your son are anxious about getting piggies. Why don't you check out the links that sus4rabbitsnpigs provided you with and go from there. Yes, you may have to travel a bit for them but in the end I think you'll find that it will be well worth travelling the distance. As for having piggies shipped to you, I do not think that is such a great idea. Think about it, put yourself in the piggies' position. How would you feel being tossed and toted around in less than ideal conditions? That's not an ideal method of travel for any human being or animal. As anxious as you may be to get piggies, you have to at the same time think about what's best for them. Be patient, you'll get your piggies. Good luck with your search.
