Hello, new here and need some help.
My name is Brandi and I currently have three piggies. Our newest pig, Falina, was thought to be a boy, but she is preggo, so we have some babies on the way. I think she is just a few days from giving birth. I'm very excited, but also a little scared. I have never had a pig give birth before. I would like to get some advice on what to do and what to expect. Also, I am going to build a C&C cage and I would like to make the bottom level for the boys and the top level for the girls. Has anyone built a cage like this before? I have searched the site and haven't found one to go by. Thanks ahead of time for any and all responces.

Re: Hello, new here and need some help.
Do you have the female separated from the males right now? If not, do so immediately.
Guinea Lynx :: Reproduction
As for the C&C cage, maybe you should wait and see how many babies and their sex before you build it. What will you do if you have no females? What if you have 6 baby boys, or all girls? Are you going to keep them all?
Go to the Guinea Pig Cages, Your Cavy At Home site, and under the top bar there's a label that says "photo gallery" or something like that. Click on it, and it shows lots of cages that other people have made.
There's also a thread on Guinea Lynx called "Show your cage" and you can get ideas there--
Guinea Lynx :: Topic - Show your cage... again!

The female, Falina, is seperated. I have done loads of research and learned that soon as I realized she was preggo. I just wanted to hear from some actual people and their experiances instead of just reading.
I plan to build the cage after the babies are born. I know that the size will change depending on how many she has. If she has no females, I will get another girl to keep her company, as I know piggies are herd animals, and need a companion. I am fully prepared to keep all of the babies, but have a friend and a cousin that are interested in two each. I'm not a bad piggie parent, and just need some advice.

You sound like you've really worked hard to prepare yourself for this. I don't think anyone's going to call you a bad pig parent.
If you haven't already, I'd say try to find a cavy-savvy vet nearby, let them know you're close to zero hour, and keep their number handy in case mama pig has any trouble.

Re: Hello, new here and need some help.
I had an unexpected pregnancy and can understand your feelings. It went very well for my Norma and she had 3 healthly babies. I feel very lucky because I have read so many stories about complications but all you can do is wait and hope for the best. I also kept all 3 babies and the mom, Norma. Good luck!!!

Re: Hello, new here and need some help.
Thanks to everyone that posted. I hope to hear more stories as well. The pic I have up is of Falina, the mom to be. I believe I have done a good job getting ready for the birth of the babies. It makes me nervous that few people witness their pigs giving birth, and so many complications can arrise. I have a cavy vet, and he is wonderful. He says Falina is very healthy and shouldn't have any problems. I read somewhere that you can feel the pelvic bones seperate and when that happens, they are only a couple days from birthing. Does anyone know what mesurement they seperate? I know that she has seperated, but it's not a lot. I expect her to have them in a week at the most. I'm sooo excited, and I hope they are all healthy. I feel at least 2, but I think there is a third. I will post pictures and let everyone know how it turns out. Does anyone know of another site to get ideas on C&C cages other than Guinea Pig Cages, Your Cavy At Home I haven't found the one I want to build, and I need something to go by.
Also, Baccalla, one of my boys looks just like your mostly white piggy in your pic. His name is Cotton, and he's my profile pic. You should check it out. They could be twins. Soooo cute.

Re: Hello, new here and need some help.
I just wanted to let everyone know that my sweet little Falina passed away last night at around 1am. I noticed she was having a lot of trouble at 12:30 and after palpating her tummy, I found the babies were really big. She was clearly in labor, and it couldn't have been more than an hour I checked on her last. Not a single baby was born, and she was panting really hard and wouldn't move. I decided to take her into the vet soon as I noticed what happened. I called to have him meet me there, scooped her up and put her in her carrier and off we went. She passed away about 5mins before we got there. He tried to do a c-section to save the babies. There were 6 total. Only one lived, just to pass away about an hour after coming into this world. It has been an aweful night for me. Cotton, her ex cage mate, before she turned out to be a girl, squeeked and wheeked all night long. It's so sad. You will be missed little Falina.

Re: Hello, new here and need some help.
I am so sorry.
If you got her from a pet store and they were the ones who missexed her, see if you can at least get them to pay for your vet bills.
