All pet store piggies are from mills like that.

I don't think management is going to let you make the changes you want to make if you work at the pet store. They have to look at their bottom line and sell their bad products to make money.
eta: yes, some buy from local backyard breeders but conditions are often the same if not worse. they have to breed en masse to supply the stores. if they only make a few bucks for each guinea pig, they have to use the cheapest housing, feed and no vet care, and breed sows as much as possible.

If I would ever work at a pet store, I would secretly sabotage them and give out rescue brochures and such.

Re: Hello all! I am new, and head over heals!
I also breifly thought about working at the pet store in the small animals department so I could help educate people that are seeking exotic pets but then a better idea occured to me, or atleast one I think is better. Our local humane society does wonderful work with cats and dogs but when it comes to small animals, I think they may be slightly lost. When I went in one day I noticed two guinea pigs in small store cages. Each piggy was in thier own cage since they didnt get along with each other. There were no veggies at the time or hidies. Our humane society will soon be moving into a brand new facility with much more space. Ive been highly considering writing an email and asking if I could help coordinate or assist with the small animal area of the shelter. I think they would be eager for help especially because people tend to just drop animals off at night and tie them to things so they cant get away. I recently got the Humane Society news letter and there was a brief story about 11 guinea pigs that were abandoned on a weekend in a rubbermaid container and were found that monday morning--as far as I am aware, only 2 survived. Anywho, with the new room that shelter would have, I would be more than willing to pay out of pocket to make a few C&C cages and cuddles cups, get some boxes for hide aways, buy some bulk hay and ask the local Fruit and Veggie market, which is across the street, for any fresh veggie donations. I know this would be a large amount of work but I currently dont have a job and since Im attending college I have alot of free time. Even if my plan doesnt fully go through, I would like to make Cuddle Cups and send them out to local rescues and shelters for small animals.

Re: Hello all! I am new, and head over heals!
My guess is that someone bought two missexed pigs, those pigs had babies, the people didnt know what to do and decided it would be a great idea to put them in a box and ditch them. They probably figured, "Oh well, atleast we are leaving them at the humane society..even if its not open. Someone will eventually find them." I just dont understand people like that, would they abandon thier kids too??
