Re: Introducing...
Me again. I have heard of piggies who use the restroom in their hidey hut on occasion, I was just wondering if I should place more fleece in her hidey hut as a precaution, or is it not necessary. Thanks again for all your help everyone!

Re: Introducing...
As far as sewing the fleece, heck have fun with it and do whatever works best for you! Oscars one of those piggies that uses his hidey as his only potty spot. This is how I came up with the diaper idea since he would tinkle and the fleece would absorb most of it but the top would still be slightly damp. I didnt want anything damp against his body so after ALOT of trial and error I finally came up with the diaper concept. I take two baby diapers labeled 5+, the biggest I could find, in the cheapest brand. I lay them side by side and use the little sticky tabs to hold them together. They keep him completely dry and any poo that gets on them can be swept off. I change them once in the morning and once before bed if necessary. For me, they really do work great. My local Walmarts cheapest brand is five dollars for 30 and those are perfect for a piggy. The best recommendation I can give is to try out different things like the diapers, a second peice of fleece, puppy training pads, etc.

Re: Introducing...
"Typically I pooper-scoop about 4 times a day or more."
Amy, I'm going to TRY and do this every second day.
Strip their cages one day, pooper scooper the next day. Then strip, then pooper scooper again.
Today I stripped their cages, so tomorrow's a pooper-scoop day. It would save alot on laundry duty, if I didn't have to wash everything, everyday. I don't mind the actual cleaning, and sanitizing of the cages, it makes me feel better when I look inside, and see a perfectly clean cage. But the laundry is a real killer!
Thanks for the tip. I will try it tomorrow, and will let you know.

Re: Introducing...
Today was a pooper-scoop day. It went not all that bad. When I first got up this morning, and looked into BOTH of their cages, I gasped. They BOTH had spilled everything, and made quite a mess!
But I picked everything up with my fingers, (I'll have to buy one of those little vacume's). I also HAD to change the little fleece square that the food dishes sit on. Not the fleece bedding, but just that little square that I mentioned earlier.
Once I changed that little square, I was starting to feel better about leaving the cages without being sanitized today. This cleaning routine seems to be going well, so I will stick with it, because it really saves me in laundry.

Re: Introducing...
Thanks so much. I was a little worried about all the laundry my self, but that makes it seem much easier. I bought the fleece today. It's very cute, blue with flowers butterflies and frogs.

Re: Introducing...
Babys Mom, you could always try to slowly lessen your cleaning schedule. If you want to, try changing the fleece maybe twice a week instead of every day. Being a cleaning-a-holic, I know its hard not to keep everything clean so just try to make little changes like with the fleece. Slowly try to change how often you wash the fleece and then maybe you'll get comfortable enough only changing it once a week. It'll be hard to get use to at first, but you can do it! Fleece is really the only thing I dont clean constantly--just once a week. I woke up this morning, went into Oscars room to feed him some breakfast and oh-my-gosh I also had a heart attack! There was poo EVERYWHERE! He's never left such a mess before. I was shcoked! I got my little vaccum, sweeped it all up and then took a baby wipe and wiped over any tinkle marks that I saw. In about 10 minutes everything was as good as new.
You know, its odd how something so little can leave so many little presents. Im just trying to come to terms that I cant always keep it as nice and pretty as I want. Its hard, but poop-scooping works great to keep me happy and the cage clean. As far as scooping with your hands--been there, done that haha. I have a box of Kleenex next to his cage for those quick clean ups. I keep a little basket next to his cage (all the under storage areas are full) that has things for cleaning like the little vaccum, baby wipes, the diapers for under the pigloo and his brush.
For me, cleaning a guinea pig cage is actually a treat! For two years I use to lug this 3 story, 3 ft tall hamste cage down a flight of steps, trying to make sure the bedding doesnt fall aout the sides, and into the laundry room. I then had to disassemble the entire thing, again avoiding bedding spillage, take everything out, soak it in hot water and soap, dry it, clean all the wire siding, clean the floors, clean off the foam foot pads on the levels, put all the bedding etc back, hide little treats all over and then lug the thing back up the flight of steps. It was such a pain. Heres a picture, the only difference is that mine had a red base.

Re: Introducing...
Cielo said on the previous page, that sanitizing your cage is okay to do even twice a week, if you'd prefer to do that guinealuv93.
It's whatever works for you, and your schedule. I think I worry about dirty cages too much, so I'm trying to slow down by sanitizing every second day.
Maybe in time, I'll try to make it every third day. It drives me crazy when I don't see a perfectly clean cage too Amy.
