Default Hello there

I am new here and a proud mom of 2 female piggy's. I got my first one (Pumpkin) about 2 months ago and got Miss Piggy yesterday. They have both settled in comfortably in there new home. I am not sure how old Pumpkin was when I got her but I am guessing she is about 4-5 months old. Miss Piggy is 9 weeks old. I'm not sure what breed Pumpkin is but she has longer hair and wavy/curly whiskers. I do have other pets, 2 dogs, a pair of Mourning Doves and a bluebar Pigeon. All of the birds I handfed. I have enjoyed reading the posts and seeing pictures of everyone"s Guinea Pigs. Here are some pics of my girls.

The first 2 pictures are Pumpkin and the last 2 are of Miss Piggy.

Have fun,
Dawn

Welcome to the forum! What adorable and sweet pigs! I'm sure you love them very much and I'm going to give you a few tips and links to help you take great care of them.

I have to ask, are you certain they are both girls? If you got your girls from petshops ten you should know that they often missex small animals. Even some shelters (like the SPCA) can accidentally missex them. If you aren't certain you should take them to a good exotic vet to have them resexed and for check-ups.

Here is a page that can help you distinguish between the sexes http://cavyspirit.com/sexing.htm

Here is a great site to help you make a bigger cage. Guinea Pig Cages, Your Cavy At Home I don't know if that bin you show in the picture is their housing but if it is it's much too small. You can make a bigger, better cage VERY inexpensively.

What kind of food do they get? it's hard to tell from the picture because the bowl looks like it's full of bedding. Here is a great nutrition thread and veggie list Everything you need to know about a cavy's diet!!! READ ME- Nutrition Charts & Info - Guinea Pig Cages Forum

That bedding (corn cob?) really isn't very good. If the GPs eat it it can cause internal impactions. You may want to switch to something like aspen, kiln dried pine or carefresh instead and make sure the bedding is about 3 inches deep.

Hope this wasn't too much to throw at you al at once. but It's obvious that you are over the moom for your girls and I figured you would want to learn the best ways to care for them.

Thank you for the welcoming.

VoodooJoint, thank you for the information. Yes, they are in a bin but the bin measures 3'x4'. I have them in there temporarily until I get the new panels for the cage I have. I feed my piggy's 2x a day with a healthy portion of all kinds of lettuce except for iceburg. I also feed them fresh carrots, green beans, red+green bell peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, brussel sprouts, apples, grapes, nectarines, honeydew, canalope, watermelon and blueberries. I rotate the variety everyday so that they aren't getting the samething everyday. throughout the day they have a full dish of pellets, hay and alfelfa avalable at all times. For some reason Pumpkin likes to keep her pellet dish covered with her bedding. I clean it out and she immediately covers it back up. Thanks for the tip about the corn cob. I will use the other stuff. I was using pine shavings and I think Pumpkin was allergic to it. She sneezes alot when I was using it so I switched to using the corn cob. Since I have been using the corn cob her sneezing has stopped. I will look into other sources of bedding to use.

By looking at the photo's, do you know what breed they are? I haven't been able to find the breed that has wavy/curly whiskers. Her coat has a slightly course feel to it. Miss Piggy's coat is real soft and silky feeling.....kind of like a rabbit. Am I doing right by my piggy's? Should I be doing anything else?

Thank you,
Dawn

Pumpkin is probably a texel cross. Texels have curly hair and whiskers but since she doesn't seem too curly she's probably crossed with an American or a Silky

Miss Piggy looks to be a standard American with agouti, orange and white coloring.

Both are adorable.

Look over the veggie list in the link I provided above. It looks like you ma be feeding too many fruits and possibly a bit too much gassy veggies (like broccoli and brussel sprouts) The list will help you tell how often they should get the different types of fruit/veggies.
