Re: my sweet fiona is gone
Well, it looks like y'all scared the bejeesus out of that kid, and instead of telling her what she did wrong, you might have convincid her to adopt another pig, and with the knew knowlege of breeding, she could become a great rescuer some day. But who knows, maybe after reading this she will kill horses.

Re: my sweet fiona is gone
this whole thread was so sad! i'm not sure who is more at fault here, but scaring and bashing a child is probably not the best way to educate. not everyone knows all the ins and outs of cavy care as well as some of the people on here, especially kids, and i really couldn't see on those threads where everyone provided her solid information about what to do to avoid such a tragedy next time. all i saw was people talking crap about her for what she did wrong. did anyone message her in private and try to provide gentle, friendly counsel about what she might do next time to avoid such problems?

Re: my sweet fiona is gone
As beautiful as some breeds are, and as sad as i would be to see them go, lowering the numbers is probobly a good idea. Even if we lose a few breeds, there are still many guinea pigs to choose from. Thinking of a guinea pig breed dying out may be an uncomfortable thought, but its not like anyone is going on a Silkie GP killing spree. Limiting the risk of diseases and disorders in guinea pigs can only help. As for guinea pigs dying out, thats stupid. If there was eventually a shortage of guines pigs, then certain organizations would come up and (hopefully) take healthy GPs to breed more. They'd be careful about it, keep track of how many there are, ect. Besides, there are a lot of backyard breeders and accidents. Anyone using extinction as an excuse is pitiful.
As for the whole "What about people babies?" arguement, that too is stupid. Guinea pigs dont realize they can die from pregancy, and they arent aware of the other problems. People are. and people can choose to prevent pregnancy. Guinea pigs cant voluntarilly take pills or get surgery.
I myself carry the trait for Sickle-Cell Anemia. I never would have known if no one had told me. I can choose to not have kids, adopt, or tell my husband about it and get him checked for SCA so we dont have a diseased baby.
But human population isnt the point of this forum. I've spent the last ten minutes reading this thread. The girl and her mother are gone and didn't belong in this forum. This is pro-rescue, and pro-breeding people cant expect much support or warmth here. I hope to Heaven this thread is closed.

I hope this is closed, too. And no, guinea pigs will NEVER go extinct, as there are missexing, so guinea pigs will never die out. I agree wholeheartedly with this post, thanks for posting it, Cheesecake.
And, as much as all guinea pig lovers would love to think, they don't think like us, and never will. They don't know what they are doing, and that's not our fault but breeding guinea pigs is.

Re: my sweet fiona is gone
Dont feel bad some people just dont understand. Having babies is hard on any animal or human. I know because I have 4 boys and lost one baby. No not at the same time they are spaced apart some. Pregnacy is hard for anyone. There is always a chance of loosing the one you love. Just remember her as she was the sounds she made when you held her. Sometimes we lose the ones we love for one reason or another but we all have to die someday thats apart of life. If we were to live forever the world would be over populated. I know you did not want to loose her and I am sorry she is gone but ignore the mean comments. Everyone has lost someone they love but it opens you up to love someone else even more.

Re: my sweet fiona is gone
I may be a little behind as far as reading this board, but I have to say that it makes me cringe. No child wants to be told they killed thier pet and I seriously doubt any adult would want to hear that either. This girl simply wanted some comfort. Regaurdless of what happened or whose fault it was if anyone here would like to be told they are a murderer, like this little girl was, please raise your hand.
