Default Can GP's catch kitty colds?

I have a 2 year old kitty that has just come down with a slight cold. There is some discharge from her eyes and she is sneezing a little. No coughing. This all started yesterday, I took her to the vet today and she was diagnosed with a herpes virus that just has to run it's course. I asked if it was contagious to Guinea Pigs and was told no, that herpes virus tends to be very species specific, however, this vet does not deal with guinea pigs at all so I am a little weary. Does anyone know? I don't want Coco or Chloe to get an upper respiratory infection. I know they can be really serious for gp's.

I have read that they can catch colds from us, at least I think so. I know when I'm sick I stay away from my guinea pigs and My sister takes care of them. Not sure on if they can catch kitty colds, maybe someone else will know more.

Thanks PA,

I never thought about them catching our colds. Lily kitty is cleared up and both gp's seem fine so they didn't catch this one anyway. Thank goodness.

The Guinea Lynx Medical Guide states that they do not get cold viruses. A URI in a gp would be due to a bacterial infection not a viral infection.

I wasn't sure if they could catch our colds or not, I just make sure when I'm sick that I don't go near them, just in case.

Thanks Kim, Guess I should have checked Guinea Lynx.

Also, PA - I understand where you're coming from. I don't think we can be too careful.

Yeah, they might not be able to catch my cold but I'm not taking any chances where their health is concerned!
