Default Questions about Bedding

I was wondering I use a bedding that they have your local walmart. Its the extra absorbant stuff. Its not wood its some wierd stuff that my boyfriend thought may have been cardboard that was wetted and left to dry back out. Its like the Carefresh or something like that that you can buy at Petco. I can't remember the name. Anyhow what i'm getting at is I noticed somewhere that a good many people use pine on here and I wanted to know which would be better for my pig?

I've used that stuff before, it's like carefresh but I don't think it's as soft. I use kiln-dried pine which works fine for my piggies I would change it if any of them would have a problem with it. I don't like aspen pine because it doesn't hold the smell and fleece didn't work for me because my piggies are bad and always found a way to move it around.

Yeah Hmm I wonder if I could find any pine. I guess I could always find out what he's being housed with now and just use the same thing either the pine or the stuff I used for Weezie. I think she liked that better. The only pine stuff they have in my direct area every once in a while had some pretty sharp pieced of wood in it i had to pick them out i was afraid she would get them stuck in her.

Have you tried Pets Preference? It is a recycled paper product. It is a little more expensive than wood shavings, but I think it is worth it. Any wood smells bad just adding water, we won't mention what pigs add to it. This stuff really holds the smell, which is important for us since our pigs are in the living room. When I adopted my pigs both cages had bad stains in the plastic bottom. Within a few months of cleaning with vinegar and using Pets Preference the stains disappeared. I sound like a commercial, haha.

I'm not sure what the stuff I used with Weezie was called, I do like it though. It sounds similar to what you've suggested its supposed to be 3 times more absorbent than the wood shavings. It really helped keep the smell down and her cage from getting stuff stuck on the bottom. Plus it never got that matted down gross look that the wood sometimes gets. Maybe i'll just stick with the stuff that I have.

It was a little expensive and I could never get it in the big bags anymore so I was going to switch.

It's so hard to find stuff that you like in BIG bags, but there is this pet warehouse that I've been to that sells aspen, and pine and other beddings in big bags, and it's 1/2 off of what pet stores charge. I get my kiln-dried pine in big bags from my tractor and supply store that's right down the road.

We have a Tractor Supply here maybe i'll have to check there as well. That could be a little easier. I can order online and get it in the bigger bags but sometimes i'm not aware that I don't have enough for the whole cage and then I have to buy the little bags anyways. It used to take two for Weezie's cage but i'm building a C&C Cage for next piggies which I plan on making pretty big so I think I may just have to order online waaaay ahead of time!

I use Carefresh for all of my rodents. It does a decent job with the smell.

I check at Tractor Supply last night and they have the carefresh bedding in the bigger bags so I think i'll be switiching to that.

Also Piggiesandmice I saw on another thread you wanted to convince your mom to buy you a C&C Cage. I just priced everything for mine yesterday and its less than 40 dollars. Even if she didn't want to give you the money i'm sure you could do something for her as payment! That's very inexpensive. Good luck!

I don't have any money in my wallet, as I'm not old enough to get a job. Mom won't let me get anything out of the bank because I got out a lot already for Twix and Hazel and their stuff.
