Default Sad news

I am hoping someone can help me understand why my guinea pigs died today. I have two females 4 and 2 yrs. old. They live on the back deck with 2 rabbits (seperated). Thursday evening I put them in a bigger cage, fresh bedding/hay/water/food - even a few grapes for a treat. Friday am they came out to say good morning, get new water/food. All day long the kids checked on them. We even had a picnic dinner out on the deck with them - no problems. Later that night I came home to check on them. Both were in their igloo not moving. I tried to get them moving to no avail. They were dead. I am so saddened by this can can't think of how they died! Does anyone have a possible reason?

Thank you for responding. They were outside, but the temp was okay and they have been out there before. I have been up all night trying to find info, rationalizing, and guilt tripping myself over this.

I'm sorry for your loss. The only way to truly know why they died is to have a necropsy done.

Guinea pigs living outside are at risk for predation, illnesses, and parasites.

Foggy is right. Out side for a pig is not what is something smart. You have greater risks.

Sorry for your loss. Being outside for a little while won't hurt but being outside all night... they could have caught a disease.

what was the temperature and the humidity level overnight and into the day? You say it was ok, but what temperature do you consider ok? Plus you have to factor in the humidity level. Pigs do not sweat and even if the temp is low, if the humidity level is high then they most likely died of heatstroke.

Since you had them outdoors, it could have been anything. Heat stroke or predator attack or they may have eaten something poisonious.

Please consider bringing your rabbits indoors.
