Two boars in Mesa, Arizona I will be moving out of the country this summer, and I am looking for nothing less than a guinea pig fanatic to adopt two boars. (I would like to take them with me, but an 18-hour flight may be too much for them.)
If you are a guinea pig enthusiast, with an interest in veterinary science, who can afford the occasional veterinary visit, and would like to adopt two spoiled, demanding boars, please let me know. I live in Mesa, Arizona, on the ASU Polytechnic campus.
Description
Fennel is black (crested?) with a rosette on top of the head that has a hint of brown and two rosettes on his back.
I think Ezekiel could be classified as a black silkie satin.
Medical history
Fennel was born 9/9/2001, after my husband’s adult daughter bought a pregnant guinea pig from a pet store. (She was not aware that the guinea pig was pregnant). I have cared for Fennel for about three years. Fennel has droopy eyes (fatty eye), eye allergy with constant sniffles, suffers from impaction, and has a hairless patch on his back that he has had since childhood. Fennel has had occasional “itchies,” but Ivercare helps. I have recorded nine dates (in threes, spaced 10 days apart) that Fennel has received Ivercare over the past two years. Fennel has received Advantage flea medication once or twice.
Ezekiel or Zeke was born in February 2006 and originates from a Petco store. I would have adopted but time was crucial; Fennel began to suffer from depression when his partner died from bloat in April 2004. Rygel had a hairless patch on his head when I first got him. But, after applying Conofite, the hair grew back. Zeke received a round of Ivercare when he was adopted (three doses, spaced 10 days apart). Zeke has never received Advantage. Zeke is in excellent health.
Temperament
Fennel is shy and squeals when picked up or touched, but he does not mind a bit of head scratching. He only runs away when he realizes that he is about to be picked up. He does not oppose his weekly showers (in fact, he seems to like them), but he does not like the hairdryer. He had one of his left, front foot, claws trimmed to short once and is scared when that particular toe is about to be cut. Fortunately, guinea pigs can be distracted easily (singing, talking, and a light touch on one of the other feet pads works wonders). Fennel has never bitten anyone since adulthood. Fennel is very sensitive to temperatures and starts to shiver at less than 72 degrees. Fennel often demands to have carrots or other goodies handfed to him and only certain pieces of hay will do.
Zeke is tough. He refused to be dominated by Fennel even when he was tiny in comparison. It took months of careful introduction before Fennel and Zeke would get along, but now they are inseparable. Zeke used to nip when he was picked up, but he stopped biting as he grew older. Zeke only runs away when it is time to be cleaned; he hates water and the hairdryer. Zeke likes to be handfed and likes steeling food.
Current habitat
I use wire shelving and the pen is 5x2 squares and built into two layers to raise the pen off the floor. I added a bed frame underneath the pen so that I could move it around more easily. I use vinyl flooring because it is the only waterproof material that I have been able to find that is not too slippery.
The piggies are kept on towels, sheets, and pieces of fleece blankets that are washed with one cycle bleach and one cycle laundry soap. The cage is cleaned daily by removing the towels, by using a squeegee to scrape the poop and hay into a bin and emptying the bin into the trash. Then by using one pitcher with warm water and soap, and one pitcher of warm water to rinse, then I use a squeegee to scrape the water into a bin. The dirty water is flushed down the toilet. Any excess water is dried up with toilet paper. This process is fast and works very well.
I use binder clips to attach towels and sheets over the pen to create caves, tunnels, and labyrinths. Occasionally, I use plastic stepping stools in the cage. I am not too fond of the igloos since they only have one opening (I think guinea pigs, or any rodents for that matter, prefer shelters that have two escape routes) and because the plastic gets too cold to the touch in the winter time.
General care
I give the piggies a “shower” about once a week. The cage is lined with vinyl flooring and the water from a pitcher runs into a bin that is placed at one end of the pen, then the water inside the bin is emptied into the toilet. The piggies are towel-dried; their ears are cleaned with a damp, small towel; they are dried with a hairdryer, and the next day their claws are trimmed. I once made the mistake of trimming Fennels claws when he was still a bit wet and shivering. Perhaps, geriatric guinea pigs have weaker bladders. I guess he couldn’t help it.
Food and water
The piggies have Timothy-based pellets and Kaytee Hay available to them at all times. They are given a piece of carrot daily in addition to some blend of kale and chard (fresh or frozen), green pepper, celery, cranberries, blueberries (frozen, fresh, dried), apple, orange, and banana.
I only use bottled water because the water here in Arizona tastes really bad. The LM Animal farm fit Le Nature water bottles, the Wal-Mart water brand, and a few others. Other brands of water fit the connecting spout somewhat but it takes a bit of adjusting before the seal is tight enough to keep the water from dripping. I also use bottled water, since I do not have to worry about the plastic bottle being clean; I know it is. And, it’s not too expensive; a 24 bottle-pack lasts for almost a month. The water bottle is attached to the pen with an oasis holdguard.
Occasionally, I brew some herbal blueberry tea. I take a water bottle, heat about half of the water, brew the tea until it is cold, and then pour the tea back into the clean bottle. In the summer time, I brew a whole batch and freeze the bottles. They love ice cold blueberry tea.
Fennel and Zeke have the following possessions:
1 large purple pigloo
3 plastic step stools (Zeke likes to sleep on top of one of the stools when the pen is covered in part by a sheet. The other two stools are “open” and both Zeke and Fennel likes to sleep underneath them.)
1 laundry bin (holds about 1 week worth of dirty towels)
3, 18-gal bins with towels, sheets, and pieces of fleece blankets (about 1 week worth)
Wire cube shelving:
44 silver squares
40 black squares
22 white squares
20 red squares (attached together with plastic cable ties and used occasionally to create a huge pen on the floor)
Heavy duty metal bed frame (single)
Connectors
Cable ties
6 x9 feet vinyl carpet
Binder clips (used to hold/attach sheets and blankets to the pen)
1 regular cage (24 x 12 x ?, only used for visits to the vet; generally prefer to use 18 gal bin for trips in the car because they are easier to wrap seatbelt around and the surfaces are smoother and less dangerous in case of an abrupt stop)
Kaytee Timothy Hay
Hay rack
IKEA Plastic clips (can be used to attach chunks of hay to the side of the pen)
Cleaning gear:
gloves, plastic bin, squeegee, brush, vinegar, pitcher
General care:
2 bottle holders (Oasis holdguard)
3 bottle connectors (fit LM animal farms bottles, I use bottled water)
Plastic, metal, and porcelain bowls
1 critter kabob stick
Advantage topical flea treatment
Ivercare
Gas relief drops
Nose drops
Vetropolycin
2 nail clippers
Vitamins
Timothy pellets (50lbs)
4 books, 4 magazines
