I don't understand why a rescue would take animals in but not adopt them out. Can you explain please? This seems like the animal population in the rescue could balloon out of control. Are you only taking in unadoptable animals?

Just because we are not adopting out at the moment does not mean we will not in the future. Things are never set in stone. Most of the guinea pigs I have were found on the streets of Casper. They were not turn-ins to the shelter by a previous owner they were basically dumped onto the roads. So my effort at this point is to have people aware that someone will take their guinea pig before they happen to misplace it (dump it). Some of the conditions of the pigs I received were really bad. After nursing them to health I do not have the desire to stress them out again when they are settled in my home. I would call myself a sanctuary at this time that takes in homeless guinea pigs. I will continue to take in guinea pigs until I feel we are full.

What is your maximum number and how many guinea pigs do you have now, if you don't mind me asking?
eta: are those the cages the guinea pigs are dropped off in, or are they in those cages while in the sanctuary?

We only have 15 at the moment. I live on 20 acres ranchette with a 6000 square foot house and barns so we have quite a bit of room. All the cages were purchased by me. Slowly I have transfered the pairs into the coroplast cages. After I neuter the males I match them up with a female or females so they all have friends. Those coroplast cages are such a time saver for cleaning. I use the standard cages when they first arrive to make sure they are healthy. I don't want to put my others at risk.
About guinea pigs being dropped off in cages I only have two that came from a private residence the rest were given to me in a cardboard box by the local shelter. That is the trouble here people just release them into the elements. Wyoming animal laws are very very basic. As long as you have a dog house for your dog and food and water your can leave the dog outside in -10 degree weather and animal control cannot do a thing about it. If that is the rules for dogs it's a wonder if there are any rules for smaller animals.
It's a real uphill battle.

I came back to apologize for the blunt nature of my questions, and you answered them so nicely! I'm sorry for the interrogative nature, and I wish you luck with the sanctuary!

Oh don't worry I just thought you were curious. The more people know about me the better. There are very few rescues in Wyoming for any animal so the more I can advertise the better. Keep in touch and good luck with your guinea pigs.

Hi all,
Is anyone traveling thru Ft Collins ,CO. to, thru or near Casper, WY in the next few weeks. There are two guinea pigs at the Larimer Humane shelter in Ft. Collins that are unadoptable and need to be brought to our sanctuary. One has a head tilt. I can meet you half way.
Thanks and Happy New Year, Susan

Hi All,
If anyone is coming thru Rock Springs, Wyoming to Cheyenne or Casper and could do a transport please let me know. There are two guinea pigs at the Rock Springs Humane Society that need transport to me (Martin Acres), we are just West of Casper on the 220.
I can meet transport at Rawlins which is past Rock Springs on the way to Cheyenne.
Thanks so much,
Susan Martin

At this point, how many more guineas would you be able to take in? Are you willing to take in guineas from areas other than WY and CO?

Yes, I am willing to take in guinea pigs from other states. The problem can be transport.
Thanks, Susan
